The VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA’s work is dedicated to the vision of absolutely ad hoc created instant compositions. Course and progression are influenced and structured by the Instant Composition Conductor with a vocabulary of hand-signs, e.g. for dynamics or timbre, or groupings of instruments, which are interpreted and developed by the ensemble on the basis of free improvisation, and whose newly appearing textures are restructured by the conductor. Instant Composition Conducting works in continuity with Lawrence D. Butch Morris’ method ‘Conduction’, but has been developed over time by VIO’s artistic director and conductor Michael Fischer as a praxis of *absolute ad hoc creation by the ensemble and the conductor, *no prepared or agreed modules, *no rehearsals, only a brief trial of the hand-signs before the concert, *the instant compositions last between 35 – 50 minutes, *each concert features a new
ensemble constellation, and usually at least one new musician as well.

It is along this route, that the music you are listening to unfolds, – poetic explorations, an unforeseen soundspaces’ and -images’ universe, in permanent statu nascendi. With its praxis of Instant Composition Conducting, the VIO drives a discourse on non-notated experimental composition and complex improvised music for large ensembles. The VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA was founded by Michael Fischer in 2004; it is one of the earliest and continuously working improvisation orchestras.
